Description
20-acre Federal Gold mining clam Canyon creek Sierra County between Downieville CA. and La Porte CA, very remotе aria.
The mining clam located 14mils from La Porte road, there is good wide camping spot good for two vehicles. There no water around camp, nearest creek for fill up water 2 miles away, you need drive buck 2 miles to Scales Rd. there is small bridge you will see good clear small creek under the bridge. The best way, you need bring with you quad or dirt motorcycle, because trail to the Canyon Creek start 2 miles from the camp. I marc the trail with red marking ribbon, it will show you rite direction to the clam. The trail length from start to the clam about 0.7 mile, but trail is is not easy it is difficult, raphe and stipe, very wild, you need very good hiking boots for this hike, no sneakers or regular shoes!
You can drive with middle size truck like Tacoma or Nissan to the trail start place, there small open place were you can with caution turn around you track,(have a look picture with quad!) that road is not very wide is narrow and has only one spot for tourn around your track, is much easy drive there with quad or motorcycle (Not drive with full size big truck!) The distance from the camp 2 miles. First go there and have a look this road and take chainsaw with you! Because ,I cleaned this road every year and cat 5-8 tresses that felt on this road.
Always bring with you good size chainsaw 24'' bar or at least 18'' for your safety, because very often big size trees can block the road and you can stack there for long time, with chainsaw you can open road for you drive buck to La Porte road! There 14 miles drive from La Porte road to the camp place! There almost not people around and very weak cellphone signal around camping place,( I use AT&T), very difficult to find somebody who can help you.
The mining clam has very difficult access, that's why nobody mining this clam before, I spend 2 days to find safe trail to the creek!
I left very good set of mining tools rite on the creek (big shovel and small one, good prybar, big size gold pun, winch for 1.5 ton, 2 heavy duty strops for 10 000 pounds with chackles and hand sacker dredge.) Bring only your water and food!
The altitude drop from camp place to the creek around 1000 fits, and this mining clam only for person who has good physical health and goo hiking experience in the mountains not older then 45 old! There no cellphone signal at the creek aria at all, only good portable GPS navigator can be used( the best one with SOS option), if something happened with you nobody can find you location (Please be very careful in this clam!)
Place where trail start down to the creek is lower for 450 fit, this is easiest trail that I found at that aria.
