Active 20-acre placer mining claim located in Pima County, AZ near Greaterville, AZ in the Greaterville Mining District. This claim is in the Santa Rita Mountains of Southern Arizona.

Less than an hour from Tucson with excellent road access from AZ-83 making for easy and pleasant prospecting trips. The elevation on the claim averages a little over 5000 feet is surprising cool in the summer making it one of the few placer locations in Arizona that is cool enough to comfortably prospect

and detect during the summer months. This claim contains a small creek running directly through the claim and

Box Canyon Creek, a seasonal/ephemeral wash that runs along the South side of this claim also.

The gold in the Greaterville District is about 18 Karat and remainder mostly silver. Detecting can be really good in the washes, hillsides and on the benches. This claim seems unworked and I found 3 nuggets after only detecting around 2 ½ hrs. Also only trash I found was a couple lead bullets. I haven’t noticed any old workings on this claim but just below this claim about a 100 yards or so downstream alongside Box Canyon creek is an old Spanish arrastra which looked like it was used to grind and pulverize a quartz vein on the slope right above it a few yards to the East. I use both PI and VLF detectors and if you detect with a VLF detector you will be happy as there are virtually no hot rocks. There is still a lot of gold in this area along with the possibility of very large gold nuggets. The largest reported gold nugget from the Greaterville Mining District weighed 37 ounces. I have been told of several 9-12 once nuggets having being found in the last few years in this district with ½ to 5 gram nuggets being fairly common. The ditches and indents in the road were covered in black sand which had run off the hillsides during prior rain events also a really good sign of potential. Small gold in this district is surprisingly abundant and could be easily worked with a recirculating highbanker with water taken from the small creek or concrete water tank on the claim.

The claim is currently active, the annual maintenance fee is paid thru September, 1 2027. and in good standing with the Bureau of Land Management .

Creeks & Placer Potential

A small creek runs directly through the middle of the claim in Sycamore Canyon providing approximately 1200–1300 feet of creek channel within the claim boundaries. This creek was even running in the dry late January early February times when I was last there and seemed to be spring fed On the South side of the claim is Box Canyon Creek, a seasonal/ephemeral wash and streambed that carries water usually only during periods of heavy rain or snowmelt. This is a wide streambed with bedrock exposed in several places and lots of gravel which would be great to detect. There is also a large concrete water tank on the South side of the claim near the SW corner also usually full.

Both of the creeks fall inside the claim, giving full access to:

creek channel gravels

inside bends

gravel bars

floodplain deposits

This is part of a drainage system historically known for placer gold. There also seems to be gravel deposits on upper benches and side hill.

Access

Access is excellent.

Box Canyon Road runs along the South side of the claim, allowing easy approach to the property and convenient access for recreational prospecting. There is also another road on the claim running diagonally on the East side of the small creek following the ridgeline of Sycamore canyon.

Box Canyon Road is a good gravel road accessible by even two wheel drive vehicles. Saw a newer convertible Camaro driving it last time I was there. The other road running diagonally through the claim I’d recommend 4 wheel drive or UTV as it’s a little rough.

from Tucson, AZ or 17 miles from Green Valley, AZ

The claim lies in the Santa Rita Mountains within Coronado National Forest , an area known for outdoor recreation and historic gold prospecting. Greaterville is arguably the most famous and productive placer gold district in southern Arizona.
