From Reno, take 395 North, then Highway 70 West to Beckwourth. Turn left on the Beckwourth-Calpine Road to Calpine, then north on Highway 89 for 4.9 miles. Turn left on Sulphur Creek Loop, go 0.2 miles, cross the bridge, and camp is on your left. Paved all the way.

About unpatented mining claims

An unpatented mining claim conveys the mineral rights, not the land itself, which remains federal land. Casual prospecting — panning, sluicing, dry washing, metal detecting, and rockhounding for all precious metals and minerals — is allowed; extensive operations on Forest Service land require a Plan of Operation. No permanent residence may be built, and sand and gravel may not be sold. You may camp on the claim for extended periods while actively prospecting (check current BLM rules), and otherwise recreate, hunt, ride, and swim freely.
